WANTING TO LOSE WEIGHT? WHAT WORKS?

Diet alone? Exercise alone? Diet and exercise together?

There is a great saying, “You cannot exercise your way out of a bad diet!”  or “ Nutrition is King, exercise is Queen and put them together and you’ve got a kingdom”

Here is my take!

Nutritional changes are much harder and intimidating to make than
exercise changes and require a total commitment to buying the food,
preparing it, being consistent, handling disruptive work schedules,
cravings and breaking old habit. Stay on track for your health because
you owe it to yourself!

Exercise without good eating only takes you halfway.

Do not do diets! Go on a great nutritional lifestyle programme that stabilises your blood sugar level, otherwise, your weight loss is short lived.

Your mind set is critical! During your transformational journey, celebrate small wins. For example:

  • A small amount of weight loss.
  • Fitting into a smaller top.
  • Going down a notch on your belt.
  • Exercise for 3 minutes 3 times a day
  • Walking around the block without collapsing.

What is your end game? Run 10kms? Climb a mountain? Fit into old clothes? Nearing 50 and want to feel and look amazing? Work towards something, it makes it more exciting.

Dieting alone can put you at risk to lose muscle mass and tone. As you get older, it is harder to stay firm and keep muscle. This is vital for hormonal levels, appearance, sleep, energy and vitality. Toning also makes you look slimmer and fitter.

Drastic diets are a no-no!  I often hear people tell me that they went on a diet and lost 20kg in 2 months but they probably lost a lot of muscle mass. Going drastic, is not sustainable. You want a lifestyle change, not a quick fix.

Other clients I see exercise 6 days a week and do not lose anything. The answer is do both. Exercise and great eating is a marriage made in heaven!

One last thing, when you’re losing weight and exercising, do not get on the scale! Feel the loss in your clothes and belt size. Muscle is dense and heavy compared to body fat. You often do not see the shift on the scale that you anticipated. A drastic caloric restricted diet will give you that “scale loss” but leave you with no muscle. Don’t be a slave to your scale. It never works on a psychological level.

Enjoy the process of getting healthier, fitter and energetic – you are worth it!
