Has Your Food Bill Gone Through The Roof?

Has Your Food Bill Gone Through The Roof?

Things are very tough these days!!! I was recently shocked to see my grocery bill after a very small shop.

Here are tips to bring down the costs and still eat healthily.

    • Pre-made meals, sauces and smoothies are expensive and filled with cancer forming additives and preservatives. Make don’t buy!
    • Grow your own herbs in pots and start a vegetable garden. I save thousands of Rands per year and I barely have to do anything in my garden. See my gardening ideas.
    • Never throw vegetables away.
    • Use left overs to make smoothies which you can freeze or refrigerate and drink throughout the week.
    • Take all veg that looks like it is spoiling and use in an omelette or frittata. Cabbage, spinach, kales, herbs, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms can all be used.
    • Fruit can be pureed and stored frozen in little containers. Add to smoothies, ice lollies, sorbets or even muffins.
    • Make stock and freeze.
    • Feed the birds or make compost.
    • Extra herbs can be made into quick dressing and pestos. See my recipes.
    • Prep food in advance on a weekend so you have food for the week.
    • Stop take outs and coffees which are over-priced and not essential.
    • Buy a big freezer. It will pay for itself in a few months if you use
it to freeze pestos, fruit and meals in small single portions.
    • Add extra grated or finely chopped carrots, celery, onions, cabbage
and spinach to casseroles and reduce your meat by half. No one will notice!
    • Slow cook very finely chopped up mushrooms in casseroles and stews.
They cook down to a delicious thick gravy and you need less meat.
    • Bread can be made into crumbs, toasted and frozen for future use.
  • Buy on special. Especially those that are two for the price of one. Make meals straight away with fresh foods and store groceries, in the cupboard.
  • Buy meat in bulk. Ask your butcher to cut the meat to your liking and vacuum pack into smaller portions.
  • Leftover fat, skin, giblets and meats can be combined with left over vegetables (check on what vegetables dogs can eat) and made into stock for your pets.
  • Invest in a pressure cooker or Instant pot. Beans cook in 12 minutes from dried. Make a whole lot and freeze into portions for easy use. This is much healthier than tins.
  • Use beans and lentils (even mashed to disguise) in casseroles, soups and stews to bulk up.
