Sugar does not make you happy!
We are taught from an early age that sugar makes us happy, chocolate solves everything, when you feeling low, eat a cake, muffin or ice cream and the worst of all, sugar gives us energy and it is a reward for being good.
The problem with sugar, is it causes blood sugar spikes and drops, which directly affects your mood, leading to feeling sluggish, moody, anxious and even angry. It will also increase your hunger.
When your body is stressed or anxious, you also have high levels of cortisol (stress hormone). This in turn suppresses the release of insulin, the hormone that takes up glucose to use for energy. This leads to storing excess sugar as fat since your body is not turning it into energy.
Eating more sugar when you stressed or anxious, contributes to more severe drops in blood sugars and more drastic drops in your mood in the long term.
The sugar/anxiety roller-coaster isn’t just relegated to daytime hours, high carbs and sugar foods keep you up at night because their energy prevents your natural sleep booster from kicking in. When we don’t get enough sleep we feel even more anxious and depressed. This becomes a vicious cycle of ups and downs.
It can take you up to 9 hours to get out of these dips and that is 9 hours of inflammation. So if you suffer from boating, flatulence, headaches, aches and pains in your body, anxiety, depression and hormonal issues, these symptoms are worse during these times. How can you ever get out of the cycle if this happening day in and day out?
